In January 1992, 12 NGOs in South Sumatra, West Sumatra, Jambi, and Bengkulu founded WARSI as a network for conservation and community empowerment. Originally named Yayasan WARSI (Warung Informasi Konservasi, or Conservation Information Hub), the organization became an important forum on forestry policy issues.
In July 2002, Yayasan WARSI transformed into an association (Perkumpulan) under the name Komunitas Konservasi Indonesia WARSI, marking an important milestone in strengthening the institution and its commitment to conservation and community empowerment.
Self-reliant community-based conservation of natural resources.
WARSI builds the economic and institutional capacity of local communities, develops natural resource management models that are fair, equitable, participatory, transparent, prosperous, and sustainable, encourages members and communities to play an active role in policy advocacy at the local, national, and global levels, builds communication, cooperation, and mediation with various parties, and strengthens information systems, knowledge management, and awareness-raising media for conservation together with communities.
Since 1992, WARSI has been running forest conservation and community empowerment programs across Indonesia, collaborating with local communities, indigenous communities, and partners at the local, national, and international levels.

Program ini bertujuan untuk penyebarluasan pembelajaran dan pengetahuan program dan proyek kepada para pihak agar bisa direplikasi oleh pemerintah, perguruan tinggi, LSM dan masyarakat adat/lokal.
Penyeberluasan informasi tersebut sangat membantu dalam mempengaruhi kebijakan pemerintah dan opini publik terkait dengan sistem Pengelolaan Hutan Berbasis Masyarakat dan pembangunan sumberdaya alam yang berkelanjutan.
Mendukung sumber penghidupan masyarakat adat/lokal yang hidup di dalam dan sekitar hutan melalui perlindungan hak dan pengembangan model mata pencaharian yang dapat dilakukan secara mandiri dan berkelanjutan.
